I chuckled to myself a little bit when I wrote the title of this post: “…For Kids to Make”.

The truth is that we all know that these crafty-type cards are about 80/20% parent vs. children involvement, but here’s the fun part: my involvement with Hadley is going to dramatically decrease this year. She is able to write many letters, come up with her own ideas, cut paper, etc., so she’s going to play a major role in coming up with her own card this year. She’s growing up so darn fast! (Time is a thief.)

It might not be as pretty or neat but I’d bet my life on the fact that our families members will adore it and display it just as proudly (if not more!)

I love accidental little traditions, and creating homemade Valentines Day cards with our girls is one of them. I still remember all of the happy, surprised texts from our family members who adored their cards that we made when Hadley was three months old, and remembering their joy has been fuel every year to continue making them. The girls love it, and I do too! Plus, homemade Valentines make the sweetest keepsakes to display. Both my parents and my in-laws have them all over the house, and it’s fun to see them displayed years later.

Idea #1

Here’s last year’s card. I painted washable acrylic paint on one kid’s hand at a time, and I stamped their hand on two cards per each time I painted her hand. We did 10 cards last year, so I painted her hand a total of five times. Once the first kid was done, I moved onto the second. I did Sadie’s hand first since her handprint was likely to be in a more spastic spot.

Idea #2

Here’s our card from 2014 with 2.5 month old Hadley. For the inside of the card, I traced her tiny hands, cut them out the best I could, glued them to string, and then used Scotch Tape to attach the string to the middle of the card.

Here’s a gift we made for Jamie’s first Valentines Day as her daddy. We used a stamp pad for this one since her feet and hands were still so tiny and could fit on one. I put this in an 8″x10″ frame, but you could also take this idea and turn it into a card as well.

Here’s our 2015 card when Hadley was just over a year old. I remember at the time being a tad frustrated that she wouldn’t cooperate with looking at me and taking the picture (DUH, SHE WAS 1!), but now I think it’s sweet because it truly captured her age.

This card opened up vertically to display a short message. 🙂

Idea #5

Another homemade valentines from babies and toddlers idea – a hanging “card”. Here is ours from 2016. I painted Hadley’s feet with washable craft paint and then stamped them on white printing paper. From there, I cut them out into hearts and glued them onto colored card stock. I printed some pictures from Walgreens, did a couple of quick hole punches, and boom – an adorable hanging Valentines card.

We don’t take Valentines Day too seriously around here, but I do think it’s a fun excuse to spread the love in simple ways and let people in your life know that they’re loved. Even if you don’t have kids or don’t like doing crafts, maybe consider sending something delicious from Sherries Berries, a small bouquet of flowers, or a small personal item that the recipient would like? I mean, who doesn’t like receiving little bits of happy mail unexpectedly?

No matter how old or young your loved ones are, sending something small in the mail is an easy and quick way to reminder your recipient that they are so loved. That can never be said enough.
