U-32 reaches 100 titles in school history in historic track and field sweep at D-II states (2024)

During post-meet festivities, the U-32 boys track and field team posed with a banner celebrating the East Montpelier school's 100th state title.

About 30 minutes later, U-32 officially secured championship No. 101: The girls team polished off a record-setting afternoon for a Raider sweep at Friday's Division II high school state meet at D.G. Weaver Athletic Complex.

"It's really exciting to be a part of that," U-32 boys senior Cyrus Hansen said. "All the hard work has paid off."

For the U-32 boys, it's their ninth title since 2013; the U-32 girls hammered the scoring books for their fourth straight crown and seventh overall over the last 12 seasons.

The U-32 girls racked up 230.5 points to second-place Peoples' 73. U-32's point total is the most ever by a D-II girls team at states; the margin of victory is also a divisional record. The U-32 boys, meanwhile, held off Hartford 148-135.

U-32 girls dominate D-II competition for four-peat

The Raider girls scored points in all but one of the 18 events (javelin). They copped six individual events, paced by Isabel Moustakas' three wins, and swept all three relays for a commanding four-peat.

Moustakas motored to victories in the 100-meter hurdles (16.02 seconds), 300 hurdles (49.79) and high jump (4 feet, 9.75 inches). The senior was also a member of the victorious 4-by-100-meter relay squad along with Mollie Mislak, Adeline Cannella and Maia Pasco.

Ginger Long (1,500, 4:52.90), Alex Weller (discus, 99-11) and Morgan Towne (triple jump, 33-1.75) also claimed events for the Raiders.

Additional depth for U-32 came from Pasco's trio of second-place finishes (long jump, pole vault, 100 hurdles), Cannella's 16 individual points and Mislak and Madison Beaudoin's 14 individual points apiece. Long added a runner-up medal in the 400 and was on the winning 4x400 with Beaudoin, Clara Maker and Mislak.

U-32's winning 4x800 quartet consisted of Amy Felice, Rheia Schall, Elsie Koger and Josie Haley.

U-32 boys hold off Hartford for D-II crown

Entering Friday's state meet, U-32 and Hartford appeared headed for a nip-and-tuck battle. While the team race did not come down to the final event, U-32 and Hartford both produced championship performances.

Runner-up Hartford saw Bennett Moreno sweep the 400 (51.64) and 800 (1:59.53) in a 26-point individual day, Jordan Davis collect 28 points with two firsts in discus (144-1) and javelin (164-10) and a second in shot put and Ayodele Lowe winning high jump (6-0) and long jump (22-3.75).

The Hurricanes also won the 4x400, anchored by Moreno, and pole vault with Benjamin Lang's 10-11.5 clear. But it wasn't enough to overcome U-32's depth and consistency.

The Raiders had at least two top-six finishers in eight of the 18 scored events, led by Hansen's double win in the 1,500 (4:10.63) and 3,000 (9:09.89) and Eddie Sawyer's 18-point effort in claiming shot put (49-6.25) and taking second in discus.

"Depth is really important to us and we get as many points as we can," Hansen said.

Middlebury's Jazmyn Hurley races to three state titles

After racing to victory in the 400 with a personal-best time of 58.01, Jazmyn Hurley "hobbled" over to check in for the 100 final. The junior had less than 10 minutes to recharge before she was back in the starting blocks for the dash.

What did she do for recovery?

"I ate some applesauce, I ate a lot of energy chews and I did a lot of glute exercises," Hurley said.

Hurley had plenty of energy for the 100, cruising to a comfortable margin in 12.86. Hurley then completed a three-win performance by rolling in the 200 (26.48).

"I want to be the best I can," said Hurley, who also won the 200 and 400 at last year's state meet. "I'm so proud of myself. It was a big day."

Peoples junior Kenique Josephs impressed in his 100-200 double win. Josephs ran two fluid finals, claiming the 100 in 11.26 and the 200 in a personal-best of 22.80.
